“coping mechanisms” is the third single from Seattle based singer-songwriter Ladifa. The opening lyric “Overindulge, I’ve made a home of the fog and its distractions” perfectly encapsulates the anxiety that 24-year old Ladifa is attempting to cope with, which feels like a generational affliction exacerbated by current events. Ladifa‘s lyrics express the difficulties of finding solace in the midst of mental anguish, as well as the pressure to perform strength as a young black woman. Paper Magazine described Ladifa‘s voice as “wise and vintage-sounding.” Stereogum described the tune as “a tame pop song about anxiety, sung with resignation,” and Ladifa‘s vocals take center stage on her most intimate song yet. Continuing their creative partnership, “coping mechanisms” is produced by label head and Indie pop mainstay Shamir.
