Brooklyn rapper KOTA the Friend returns with a universal message about brushing off negativity on “Hope You Heal.” His latest upbeat single – embodying a Groovy/Love/Funk/House/Dance vibe that’s unlike anything he’s previously released. The self-produced track finds Kota searching for peace of mind over pulsating drum n bass lines, setting the tone for his new summer sound.
Bringing a fresh perspective to house music, “Hope You Heal” is an uptempo spin on staying positive. It’s an experimental foray into the brighter side of hip-hop that showcases Kota’s knack for moving the rhythmic needle. Speaking on universal topics that bind, his latest score pushes play on progress and proves that there is room for reasoning in rap – especially when it comes to the healing power of music.
Behind the track, KOTA The Friend shares: “It’s an upbeat record about not allowing people’s negativity to get the best of you. ‘I hope you heal’ is basically my response to anyone that is trying to hurt me or distract me from my joy and my purpose.”
The video, which is directed by KOTA The Friend as well, gives a firsthand view of a stay-at-home jam session that compliments the groove of the track.
Keeping the good vibes alive all 2023, the new track arrives on the heels of Kota’s deluxe release for his latest album, To See a Sunset, with Statik Selektah. This time around, he traded his signature subtitled visual vignettes for a more mellow means of expression that’s dance-ready in the truest sense. But rest assured, the Brooklynite’s DIY approach remains intact.
As he continues to lead by example as a black indie rapper, Kota’s laid-back style meets the public’s demand for quality content. There’s something to be said about his commitment to pushing the culture forward on his own terms, traversing previous lanes with a new sound that’s symbolic of his constant evolution as an artist.

Tryna make love, tryna get high
Tryna have fun, tryna get right, right
Lyrics:
Chorus
Take my number, call me anytime you feel
Bet you wonder if the things I say are real
On my mama, I just vibe and pay my bills
Don’t do drama, I just say I hope you heal
Verse 1
Hit me up when you wanna fly out
Life gettin’ hard, take your time out
Them boys checkin’ your phone
Chill, lil’ baby, I’m grown
I don’t wanna stress in the crib
Make a nigga feel like his ex and then quit
She just wanna pop out, flex with the kid
Party all night, have sex in the whip
Yeah, apologies to my haters, yeah
I ain’t doing no favors, yeah
I ain’t sure why they mad, bitch
I just hope they get past it
In the boat with my chick
Cartier on my wrist
Thank the Lord for this view
Left the watch, I’m in line
Got no time for your shit
Chorus
Take my number, call me anytime you feel
Bet you wonder if the things I say are real
On my mama, I just vibe and pay my bills
Don’t do drama, I just say I hope you heal

Verse 2
I don’t be around like that
Stay calm, I ain’t never loud like that
Fake love, I don’t get down like that
That’s why I don’t be around like that
Dance through the whole night
We could make love ’til the sun come
Feel real good when it’s done right
Put you on a flight if you want some
Yeah, I ain’t gon’ fight with no one
And waste my time, there’s no fun
Hoes can’t kill my vibe, only
Let it roll off my shoulder
Tryna get peace, tryna live life
Tryna get dreams, tryna get nights
Tryna make love, tryna get high
Tryna have fun, tryna get right, right
Chorus
Take my number, call me anytime you feel

About KOTA the Friend:
KOTA the Friend is a kid from Brooklyn that loves art. He burst onto the music scene in 2016, helmed by his well-received debut EP, Palm Tree Liquor, which garnered praise from industry staples such as Billboard, XXL, RESPECT. Mag, and many others. This was around the same time that the multihyphenate started to see success with his “Lyrics to GO” series, securing a fervent fanbase for his subtitled rap videos. But before Kota became the enigma that he is today, he was finding his way through Clinton Hill, consuming art on different levels. His gift is that he knows how to execute a vision, backed by a worldview that sees the bigger picture in all things. His seminal debut album, FOTO, has a soulful texture and was anointed as “one of the best hip-hop albums of 2019” by Rolling Stone. In 2020, the Brooklyn MC was riding high from the momentum of his critically acclaimed sophomore LP, EVERYTHING, which arrived during the isolating lockdown of the pandemic. The album went on to debut at No. 1 on the iTunes Hip-hop Chart, peaked at No. 4 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums Chart, and earned Kota his first entry on the Billboard 200. The following year was no different, with a presidential cosign leading Kota’s campaign for greatness. His track, “Lupita’s Interlude,” was the first song on President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ inauguration playlist, which was curated by Emmy Award-winning actress Issa Rae. Further, UPROXX crowned Kota “one of the most commercially viable indie artists since Chance The Rapper,” which signaled a breakthrough 2021 for the lauded scribe. Last year was highlighted by his third studio album, MEMO; followed by 2023’s Lyrics to GO, Vol. 4, and his 18-track opus To See a Sunset (Deluxe) with Statik Selektah. On top of all this, as an independent artist, Kota has amassed over 700M+ streams to date.
